Inspector Looking For Work?

Although we do not currently have a need for additional inspectors, we hope to in the coming months. Please email you resume or work history to us at inquire@inspectchicagoland.com. Experience is not needed, but is helpful.

Who makes a good field inspector? Basically anybody who is a responsible, detail oriented person. It is not a hard business to learn when the right tools are used.

Basic tools for a field inspector are:

  • Reliable vehicle, preferably one that gets good mileage
  • Digital Camera, with adjustable image size and resolution
  • A PC, internet connection and fax machine
  • Basic knowledge of emailing photos and renaming and attaching files
  • Good communication skills
  • Map and routing software such as Microsoft Streets & Trips or other similar products
  • Common sense

With the above tools anyone can become a field inspector. This is not a 9 to 5, typical salary or hourly pay job. Each inspector is an independant contractor essentially running their own business. Inspectors are paid on a "per inspection" basis and are responsible for their own expenses incurred--gas, car maintenance, camera, internet connection etc. Inspections have a specified completion window and due date, with 7 to 14 days being typical for most of the inspections we currently do. Though it is not a terribly physical job, there is some walking in and around houses required and trudging through snow in the winter.

Though there are some guidleines when inspections can be done (ie. not on Sundays or Holidays), each inspector is free to set his or her own schedule keeping in mind the due dates of the inspections in hand. Keep in mind, lately, most mortgage related inspections have started to require a daytime photo, so daylight hours are necessary for this work.

This is really a unique business that not many people are even aware exists. The flexibility makes it suitable for almost anyone including stay-at-home moms and dads, retirees, people already employed FT who have some extra daytime hours available and realtors or any other professional who has the ability to be flexible with their schedule.
